Joyce had expected to have Ulysses finished by about May 1921. But things didn’t work out that way. He still had the last two episodes – Ithaca and Penelope – to write. But time was running out. He was determined that Ulysses would be published on his 40th birthday – February 2nd 1922. By mid August the Penelope episode (Molly Bloom’s famous monologue) was fully planned.
