Ulysses was slowly gaining a reputation in literary circles in America. Since March 1918 Ulysses had been appearing in serial instalments in the American magazine The Little Review. In February 1921 the US Court of Special Sessions judged the book to be obscene and banned the serialisation of it the literary magazine, The Little Review. Following on that judgment no publisher would touch it.
