The eventual publication of Ulysses was becoming a major issue in Joyce’s mind. In April, Joyce arrived in despair at the Bookshop, Shakespeare & Company, and moaned to the owner, Sylvia Beach, that “my book will never come out now”. Her automatic response, without fully gathering her thoughts was, “Would you let Shakespeare and Company have the honour of bringing out your Ulysses?” Joyce unhesitatingly agreed.
