Early in 1922 Joyce was interviewed by the writer and journalist, Djuna Barnes, for an article to be included in the March 1922 issue of the socialite magazine Vanity Fair. They met at the Café les Deux Magots. In the interview Joyce declared “The pity is that the public will demand, and find, a moral in my book. Or, worse still, they would take it in some serious way. But ….. there is not one single serious line in it”.
